5G operates on two main frequency bands: the lower-frequency sub-6 GHz band and the higher-frequency millimeter-wave band (24–100 GHz). These millimeter waves, which are a cornerstone of 5G’s high-speed capabilities, are absorbed primarily by the skin and eyes. Critics argue that this absorption could lead to unforeseen health consequences, even at low exposure levels.

In 2021, a report by the European Parliament raised alarms about the carcinogenic potential of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). While lower frequencies were linked to gliomas and acoustic neuromas, the report noted that research on the higher frequencies utilized in 5G is still in its infancy. This uncertainty fuels concerns about the long-term safety of widespread 5G adoption.

Recent Findings and Alarming Trends

A study conducted in late 2024 highlighted potential risks associated with prolonged exposure to 5G frequencies. In a controversial move, the telecommunications industry has been accused of funding studies designed to downplay risks associated with RF radiation. This mirrors tactics previously employed by the tobacco and fossil fuel industries, where financial interests trumped public safety.

Spotlight on Vulnerable Populations

Children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of 5G radiation. A 2023 report from the Environmental Health Trust highlighted that children absorb more RF radiation in their developing tissues compared to adults. Moreover, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF radiation as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in 2011, a designation that critics argue should warrant stricter regulatory oversight as 5G expands.

Until more conclusive evidence is available, individuals can take simple steps to reduce exposure, such as limiting the use of wireless devices, using wired connections when possible, and keeping devices away from the body during use.
