Air conditioners are a necessity for many, especially those in warmer climates like the south. Although it gets quite warm in most of the country at certain times of the year. If you have a unit that is primarily outside, you’re better protected. But for those with window units and inside unites, EMF radiation is a risk. Read more about EMF radiation and air conditioners.

How Do Air Conditioners Emit EMF Radiation?

The newer the AC, the more radiation it emits. And keep in mind it’s the unit itself that emits this electromagnetic field radiation. It doesn’t come through the vents, thankfully. This is because it has similar technology to a refrigerator. It needs a ton of energy to function properly, so it emits a lot of EMF radiation.

How Do You Protect Yourself?

While you may not be able to not use your air conditioning unit at all, especially when it’s scorching hot outside, there are a few ways you can limit the exposure and protect yourself.

Use the AC Less

If possible, use your air conditioning unit less. You might consider running it when you’re at work, then turning it off when you get home. Again, we realize if it’s super hot, this isn’t possible. But if you’re in an area where the temperatures aren’t extreme, this is an idea.

Invest in a Faraday Cage

A Faraday cage is a metal cage that goes over the unit and protects you better from EMF exposure. If you cannot find one that works for your particular unit, you can easily make one yourself. Find conductive metal mesh and put it around the unit, making sure there are no large holes or open gaps. If possible, use an EMF meter to measure if it limits some EMF radiation.

Invest in a Dirty Electricity Filter

Air conditioners are a main culprit in dirty electricity, so investing in a dirty electricity filter is a good idea if you have one.

Use Distance

If you cannot turn off the air conditioner due to the high temperatures, make sure you’re not sitting right in front of it. There are still harmful effects, but you’re at least a little further away from it.

As technology evolved and EMF moved from my work into the home, it became more important to deal with it in a sensible way. There is lots of controversy on EMF's impact to health. Fortunately, there are some simple principles you can apply to minimize impact and exposure until the science of EMF's impact on humans is resolved.
