Are Heating Pads Bad For You?
Heating pads have been used for decades. Some use them for sore muscles, and while there are many ways you can utilize one – the question to ask is, “Are heating pads bad for you?” When it comes to EMF radiation, here are a few answers.
Electricity and EMF
It’s important to know that we get electromagnetic fields from a variety of places. In fact, all electronic devices and electrical household items generate them. These electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are natural invisible lines. Think of how a compass works – that is due to electromagnetic fields. They are especially prevalent near things like power lines, power cords, and that aforementioned electrical equipment and electronic devices. But what about something as simple as a heating pad?
Heating Pads and EMFs
According to Dr Weil
Some research has suggested that exposure to low-level magnetic fields emitted by such appliances as hairdryers, electric blankets and electric razors can damage DNA in brain cells. The data come from a study in rats at the University of Washington, which found DNA damage in animals exposed to a 60 hertz field for 24 hours; more damage was found after 48 hours. Henry Lai, Ph.D., the study leader said that data from this and a previous study suggest that the effects of exposure are cumulative and may build up in humans over time as a result of repeated brief use of common plug-in appliances.
Mostly this exposure is due to proximity of the item. And what is closer to your body than a heating pad when in use?
What Are Your Options?
As mentioned about proximity, with most electronics you can simply keep them further away from your body. But this can’t be done with a heating pad. So, what can you do?
The good news is that some places sell non-EMF heating pads. These are an excellent alternative to traditional heating pads, and help keep away the electromagnetic fields you are otherwise exposed to.
You can also use other means, which granted, are not as convenient. You can heat up a towel in the microwave as a temporary option. The problem is that these do not stay warm long and you’re constantly getting up and down to reheat. You can also use an inexpensive hot water bottle. Your best bet is to find a heating pad that is non-EMF. While there are no long-term studies on their safety, they are an alternative that is more minimal for EMF exposure.
